Being the primary support system for a child is no easy task. Children are little need-machines. Parents will go to extraordinary lengths to care for their children. And, there are times as parents and caretakers we don’t know what else to do. As a parent, I know the feeling well.
I know it’s not about whether you love your children, that’s not in doubt or you wouldn’t be on this website. It’s about trying to know what is best for them. It’s about a world full of information and opinions and very little understanding.
There are so many things out of our control as parents or caregivers. We try to shield our little ones (and not so little ones) from harm and pain, but the world we live in feels like it’s against us all too often.
I believe there is nothing more vulnerable or braver than bringing your child to a stranger and asking for help. I’m glad to walk with you as your child taps into their strengths in a new way.
Children are built to heal. I see it in these precious young ones in my office every day. It’s my honor to better understand the children’s perspective, and help parents and children communicate, build better relationships, find new levels of trust, and move forward in hope.
As a parent, I know what it’s like to feel overwhelmed, underappreciated, exhausted, and at a loss for what to do next. Often times a child’s behavior is the only way they know how to communicate big feelings. They don’t yet have the skills to express them verbally or in ways that feel helpful. It is my life’s work to help a child find ways to express themselves that moves them toward healing, understanding, and a loving future.
Teaching social-emotionally skills to children is as important as any other skill we teach our children. The most powerful tool to teach this is being on the receiving end of the positive social-emotional interaction. Modeling this for our children doesn’t come easy, especially if it’s something that wasn’t modeled for us children.
